AZ Family Phoenix: RCA Patient Receives CentraSight Telescope Implant
/ CentraSight Telescope Implant, Macular Degeneration, Media /by retinalconsultantsRetinal Consultants of Arizona Patient is First in Phoenix to Receive CentraSight Telescope Implant for End-Stage Macular Degeneration.
When Richard Clarida headed in for his latest eye appointment, his doctors were as happy to see him as he was to see them.
That’s because at this appointment, Clarida could actually see them, something he hasn’t been able to do for many years.
“Looking straight at someone, you really don’t know who they are,” Clarida said. “It’s just, you have these blind spots.” Clarida has macular degeneration.
Dr. Derek Kunimoto, with Retinal Consultants of Arizona, said the disease steals vision from the central part of the eye., while peripheral vision remains, leaving patients with a blind spot in the center of their vision field. Until now, there was no way to restore that lost sight. “Patients would have to go along with their lives the best they possibly can,” Kunimoto said.
For Clarida, that just changed, thanks to a tiny telescope from CentraSight, which Dr. Michael Depenbusch with Arizona Eye Center implanted in his right eye.
“The operation is a cataract operation, but instead of a typical implant we use a telescopic implant,” Depenbusch said. The telescope, which can fit on the tip of your finger, enlarges the image on the retina, allowing non-diseased areas to process the image.
Just one week out, Clarida said he can notice the difference. “I am seeing better than I did before the operation,” he said. Clarida will now undergo physical therapy to get his eyes working together.
“It’s still a little like I am kind of looking through water sometimes when I just look through that eye, but I understand that will probably clear,” he said.
The doctors said it is part of a huge advance in treating the No. 1 cause of blindness in the U.S. ”It does seem a bit like science fiction – thinking you could put a telescope in someone’s eye. But it is here and we are doing it,” Depenbusch said.
“Macular degeneration is the greatest cause of vision loss in this country, so there have been a lot of research dollars, a lot of human interest around it, and therefore this technology has evolved with that base and that thrust to hit this stage,” Kunimoto said.
Because technology moves so fast, it is essential patients ask about options to find the best fit in a future that really is looking brighter.
“You know new things are coming every day. You just need to get to good doctors,” Clarida said.
The surgery has just been approved by the FDA. Clarida is the first Phoenix patient to receive it since approval.
Retinal Consultants of Arizona can help patients determine if they are appropriate candidates. Factors include what stage the macular degeneration has progressed to, size of the eye and a patient’s willingness to follow through with physical therapy.

Implantable Telescope Technology Now Available in Phoenix
/ Macular Degeneration, RCA /by retinalconsultantsNEW YEAR BRINGS SIGHT RESTORING “IMPLANTABLE TELESCOPE” TECHNOLOGY TO ARIZONA PATIENTS WITH END-STAGE AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
PHOENIX-BASED RETINAL CONSULTANTS OF ARIZONA JOINS PATIENT CARE TEAM
January 7, 2015 – Phoenix, AZ – Retinal Consultants of Arizona (RCA) – one of the nation’s leading Retina & Vitreous clinical research and patient treatment facilities – is proud to be selected as part of the continuity of care team for patients of the CentraSight® Treatment Program. CentraSight is a first-of-kind treatment program that utilizes a tiny telescope implant for End-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most advanced form of AMD and the leading cause of blindness in older Americans.
Approximately 500 patients across the country have received the telescope implant to date, and Retinal Consultants of Arizona is one of 100 CentraSight teams in the U.S. No surgeries have been performed to date in the Phoenix area.
The telescope implant is FDA approved for patients age 65 and older and is the only surgical option that improves visual acuity by reducing the impact of the central vision blind spot caused by end-stage AMD. The cost for the telescope implant and visits associated with the treatment program are Medicare eligible.
Patients with end-stage AMD suffer from a central blind spot. This vision loss makes it difficult or impossible to see faces, read, and perform everyday activities such as watching TV, preparing meals, and performing self-care. The telescope implant has been demonstrated in clinical trials to improve quality of life by improving patients’ vision so they can see the things that are important to them, increase their independence, and re-engage in everyday activities. It also may help patients in social settings as it may allow them to recognize faces and see the facial expressions of family and friends.
Smaller than a pea, the telescope implant uses micro-optical technology to magnify images that would normally be seen in one’s “straight ahead” or central, vision. The images are projected onto the healthy portion of the retina not affected by the disease, making it possible for patients to see or discern the central vision object of interest.
“The CentraSight Treatment Program offers new hope and an improved quality of life for patients suffering with central vision blindness due to late-stage age-related macular degeneration,” said Dr. Derek Kunimoto, retina ophthalmologist and co-managing partner, Retinal Consultants of Arizona. “We are proud to be the leading referral practice in the Phoenix Valley for this breakthrough treatment plan.”
Arizona patients or caregivers interested in learning more should contact Retinal Consultants of Arizona at 602-222–2221.

About CentraSight
CentraSight is the first-ever telescope implant for end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most advanced form of AMD and the leading cause of blindness in older Americans. Patients with end-stage AMD have a central blind spot or missing area in their vision that makes it difficult or impossible to see faces, read, and perform everyday activities.
The CentraSight Treatment Program allows patients to see again by implanting a tiny telescope in the eye in an outpatient procedure, then coordinating with vision specialists to help the patient learn how to use their new vision for everyday activities.
