Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of permanent vision loss in the western world. With the shift in patient populations, the prevalence and social impact of this condition is only expected to rise further. Given this large unmet clinical need, AMD is an area of intense clinical and research interest, promising a dynamically shifting therapeutic landscape in the near future. Current theories of the etiology of both exudative and non-exudative AMD, as well as current and potential future treatment strategies of both subcategories will be discussed.
