Education & Honors
Rahul Iyengar, MD graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2014 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He remained in Ann Arbor to complete his medical school at the University of Michigan as a merit scholarship recipient, graduating in 2019 with multiple academic awards and induction into the Alpha Omega Alphga (AOA) national medical honor society.
Following his medical internship at Aurora St. Luke in Milwaukee, WI, Dr. Iyengar completed his residency training at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, one of the top ophthalmology training programs in the country. He then completed a 2-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery with the USC Roski Eye Institute and Retina-Vitreous Associates Medical Group. He was presented with the Senior Resident Teaching Award upon residency graduation and was then chosen to serve as the Chief Fellow for the USC ophthalmology department.

Through his vitreoretinal surgery training at the Retina-Vitreous Associates/USC Roski Eye Institute fellowship, Dr. Iyengar gained extensive experience managing complex retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, advanced diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, retinal vascular occlusions, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, and ocular trauma. His academic interests explore the efficient utilization of advanced, multimodal retinal imaging in clinical care settings, assessment and advancement of surgical outcomes, and healthcare innovation for the reduction of costs associated with high-quality care delivery.
Dr. Iyengar has published numerous research articles in prominent, peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals, including JAMA Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Genetics, Clinical Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmic Epidemiology. His published work seeks to advance the clinical utility of ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography in diabetic retinopathy, explore novel strategies for the cost-effective delivery of global eye care, and investigate underlying genetic markers for rare vitreoretinal diseases. His research has been presented at multiple conferences at the local and national level.
Dr Iyengar is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Community Service, Affiliations & Hobbies
Outside of medicine, Dr. Iyengar enjoys golfing, hiking, playing tennis, spending time with family, and cheering on his favorite sports teams (particularly the Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines).
