October 26, 2015 – Phoenix – Dr. Pravin U. Dugel, managing partner, Retinal Consultants of Arizona (RCA) – one of the nation’s leading Retina & Vitreous clinical research and patient treatment facilities – has been appointed Physician Executive Director of the future Banner University Medicine Phoenix Eye Institute. The institute aligns with existing Banner Health structures such as Banner Health Network, Clinical Consensus Groups, Clinical Discipline Teams and Service Lines, and operates as the academic arm of Banner’s Care Management and Health Management structures.
The Eye Institute will work to integrate a network of ophthalmologists who believe that an environment of teaching and scholarship can accelerate the delivery of value-based care and improve the health of a population. The Institute will be organized into various subspecialty-based centers and contribute to teaching, scholarship and the delivery of care to our most complex patients.
“The new Banner Phoenix Eye Institute creates an unprecedented, academic collaboration of specialized care aimed to expand a very high-level of data-driven ophthalmic services for patient care in Arizona,” said Dr. Pravin Dugel. “This is an exciting new venture in Eye Health that intersects and streamlines the best, proven diagnostic and treatment modalities to patients that would otherwise not be available. We intend to provide disease-based interdisciplinary care that involves community physicians of various specialties and expertise. The extensive involvement of community physicians in a collaborative fashion is the key to success.”
The creation of the newest Banner – University Medicine Institute, the Banner – University Medicine Eye Institute is part of Banner Health’s new academic division, but has a much broader reach across the care continuum. The Institute brings together signature clinical programs anchored at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP) that will serve as destination centers for the delivery of high-value, differentiated and coordinated clinical care in an environment of scholarship, teaching and quality improvement. Other institutes focus on neurosciences; transplant medicine; advanced lung disease; endocrinology and more.
This evolving institute model will represent an intersection of various entities and structures including our valued independent ophthalmology physician groups, UA COM-P, Banner Children’s, the BHN High Value Network and our Banner Health medical centers.
Dr. Dugel serves, and remains, as the managing partner of Retinal Consultants of Arizona and founding member of the Spectra Eye Institute. Dr. Dugel is a world-renowned retinal specialist who has authored more than 200 papers, 35 book chapters and has been invited to lecture at prestigious meetings, Visiting Professorships and Universities worldwide. He is on the Editorial Board of several major medical journals. Dr. Dugel is internationally recognized as a major clinical researcher, having been a primary investigator in over 50 multicenter clinical trials. His research and educational contributions earned him the prestigious Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Dr. Dugel is an active philanthropist offering time, expertise and support to many charitable organizations throughout the world. Dr. Dugel serves as Managing Partner of Retinal Consultants of Arizona and Founding Member of the Spectra Eye Institute.
