The injection of medications into the eye has been common for many diseases. Naturally, the thought of an “eye injection” can provoke anxiety and fear, but fortunately, the procedure rarely causes any discomfort. The procedure is performed in the office and has a rapid recovery time. Anesthetic drops are used and a small anesthetic injection may also be given to ensure minimal discomfort. The eye is then cleaned with an antiseptic solution prior to the injection. Antibiotic drops may be prescribed for a few days after the injection. After the anesthetic wears off, some patients experience a scratchy sensation that usually only lasts for a day or two. They eye may also appear red for several days.
